![]() The Sentry has developed strong partnerships with civil society and journalists in Africa. Sentry staff have previously served at the United Nations, the US National Security Council, Treasury and State Departments, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as in a range of positions across the intelligence community, academia, think tanks, public advocacy organizations and media. ![]() The Sentry is an investigative and policy team composed of financial investigators, international human rights lawyers, and regional experts, as well as former law enforcement agents, intelligence officers, policymakers, investigative journalists, and banking professionals. Our role is to present the evidence and convince stakeholders to use these same tools to bring an end to corruption and violent exploitation. ![]() Many policy tools for financial leverage and accountability, including sanctions and anti- money laundering regulations and other measures, already exist and have been deployed in concerted campaigns against international terrorism, nuclear proliferation and narcotics trafficking. Based on our investigations, we compile and share reports, targeted dossiers and other investigative materials that expose the individuals and networks connected to violence and corruption, as well as the main financial and political mechanisms and loopholes they use to move their ill-gotten gains through the international financial system.Īrmed with the evidence provided by our investigations, The Sentry engages the governments and financial institutions with the ability to take action. Our work is rooted in a nuanced understanding of the context and a wide network of local partners. The Sentry’s investigators “follow the money,” identifying the financial mechanisms and political loopholes used to channel these illicit funds, and exposing the individuals and networks connected to violence. To this end, The Sentry strives to (1) create real accountability for those who benefit from systems of violent kleptocracy (2) provide leverage to peace efforts aimed at ending Africa’s deadliest conflicts (3) undermine the profitability of war (4) lessen the threat of genocide and atrocities in unstable environments and (5) support the restoration of state institutions that have been captured for personal profit. The Sentry seeks to create significant financial consequences for those funding or profiting from mass atrocities in order to alter the incentive structures that currently favor war over peace. By shutting off the flow of corrupt money and creating real consequences for the perpetrators of atrocities and financial crimes in East and Central Africa, as well as the transnational networks enabling and profiting from their actions, we aim to create new leverage for peace, human rights and good governance. The Sentry’s fundamental objective is to disrupt this cycle of conflict and corruption.
